Article: CITEDH-R1 holds IT seminar workshop

A research seminar cum workshop was held on January 22, 2010 at Lorma Medical Center Heliport. The event was designed to produce much necessary research output in IT, as prioritized by the officers and members of the Council of ITE Deans and Heads of Region I (CITEDH-R1).

The activity aimed to equip participants with needed techniques and skills that will enable them to produce research outputs in the field of Information Technology.

Dr. Henry Galuba, Research and Faculty Development coordinator of Lorma Colleges talked about information power and the competitiveness of IT students in the Philippines. He also stated that in competitiveness, the Philippines ranks 10th among 17 ASEAN countries and 47th among 66 countries worldwide. Meanwhile, research and development in the Philippines is on the 16th spot in ASEAN and on the 62nd place worldwide.

“The topic is interesting, the speaker is excellent, he knows a lot and he is citing a lot of knowledge, CITEDH-R1 should organize more activities like this,” expressed Dir. Reynold P. Villacillo, Director of ICTC (Information and Communication Technology Center), Mariano Marcos State University, Batac City, Ilocos Norte.

Dr. Galuba also discussed “Research in the Computing and Engineering Sciences.” He stated that today, money is the source of power, unlike in the past where the mind is only the source.

“He mastered the subject, he has a sense of humor, the topic is presented very well and lastly, the seminar is very educational,” commented Mrs. Noreen and Mr. Mel Miranda, faculty members of Northern Luzon Adventist College, Sison, Pangasinan.

Engr. Reyen Sabate discussed updates from CHED. He reported some developments in Northern Luzon, such those on LUPRICAA, SQUAA, and festivals. Dr. Ana Belen Noble organized the event and served as emcee.

To inform students about common psychological problems experienced by adolescents, College of Arts and Sciences-Psychology Department conducted a seminar on eating and sexual disorders on February 18, 2010 at Lorma Colleges Audio Visual Room.

Ms. Myla Lucina, psychology instructor, was one of the speakers. She focused on eating disorders, which are most common among ladies. These disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. To end her topic, she gave considerable tips on how to avoid acquiring these disorders while staying in good shape.

Ms. Lailanie Soriano, another psychology instructor, discussed about sexual disorders that, in turn, are commonly experienced by gentlemen. These are of four categories, namely, sexual desire disorders, arousal disorders, orgasm disorders, and pain disorders.

“The seminar is good; the speakers delivered their topics very well. Their topic is interesting especially to us boys, very informative indeed,” commented Mr. Jestin Lindley Reyes, BSPT1.

LORMA Colleges emerged victorious in the 2009 La Union Private Colleges Athletic Association (LUPRICAA) meet held on November 17 to 20.

Lormanians have once again proven their skills through sports. They bagged 11 gold medals in the men’s division: 200 m run, table tennis (single 1 and doubles), Taekwondo (featherweight, lightweight, and welterweight), and Karate (kata). Meanwhile, 4 gold medals were bagged in the women’s division: lawn tennis (single 1, single 2, and doubles) and table tennis (single 2).

Moreover, Lormanians secured 12 silver medals in the men’s division: volleyball, sepak takraw, 400 m run, table tennis (single 1), Taekwondo (flyweight and bantamweight), and Karate (pinweight). Five silver medals were secured in the women’s division: volleyball, badminton (single 1), chess (board 1), table tennis (double), and taekwondo (pinweight). “I developed my skills in playing volleyball. It’s a great honor to have the silver medal. We didn’t expect any medal,” said one of Lorma’s athletes.

Lorma obtained 5 bronze medals in the men’s division: badminton (doubles), lawn tennis (doubles), Taekwondo (pinweight), and Karate (flyweight and bantamweight). Lorma’s women athletes acquired 3 bronze medals: badminton (single 2 and doubles) and chess (board 2).

LUPRICAA is composed of Agoo Computer College, AMA-Computer College La Union, CICOSAT College, Congress College, La Union College of Science and Technology, La Union College of Nursing, Arts and Sciences, Lorma Colleges, Northern Philippines College of Maritime Science and Technology, Philippine Central College of Arts, Science and Technology, Polytechnic College of La Union, Saint Louis College, Sea and Sky College, Southern Ilocandia College of Arts and Trade, STI College-La Union, St. John Bosco College, and Union Christian College. With the theme “Sports for Global Peace,” the event was hosted by Union Christian College.

Article: LC hosts YMCA Provincial Acad Olympics

Lorma Colleges accommodated participants to the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Provincial Academic Olympics held on February 23, 2010, with the theme “Striving Together to Build Young Leaders: Transforming Lives Toward Sustainable Communities.”

The event aimed to train holistically a wide spectrum of young people from La Union and to bring them together for a mutual sharing of experiences, insights, and visions. Through the youth, YMCA expects to make its missions more responsive to the needs of the times.

The competition was divided into three categories, namely, the Red Triangle Club for elementary pupils, the High-Y Club for high school students, and the College-Y Club for college students.

In the Red Triangle Club, Brain and Heart of a Christian Educational Institution, Inc. bagged the overall championship. Participants from the said school got four medals from the vocal solo, draw and tell, modern dance, and quiz bee contests.

In the High-Y Club, Saint Louis College won six gold medals from the folk dance, bible quiz bee, statistics quiz bee, extemporaneous speaking, oration, and essay writing contests, making them the overall champion.

Meanwhile, competitions in the College-Y Club were dominated by Lorma Colleges, with four gold medals to brag. The winning Lormanians were Lovely Ulpindo (essay writing), Jubille Anne Bonifacio (bible quiz bee), Clarissa Baterina (extemporaneous speaking), and Jacqueline Miranda (on-the-spot drawing).

The event champions will represent YMCA-La Union in the “Annual North Luzon Regional Academic Olympics” at Manila. They will be joined by delegates from Cagayan, Olongapo, Baguio, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, and Ilocos Norte.

Nobody Loves Me

My Family doesn't love me,
They'll get mad whenever I commit little mistake,
They always ignore what I'm doing

I am just 16 year old girl
who needs attention of my parents.
I'm doing everything to make them proud
but it seems that it's getting worse.

I remember the time when I was in 2nd year highschool,
When my teacher is about to announce to my fellow
classmates who are the lucky students who got honors,
I'm so happy when I heard my name on the list,
I rushed home immediately to tell that good news
to my parents and to let them know that I am doing
everything I can just to make them proud of having me
as their daughter.

It's graduation day, program is about to start,
I'm searching for my parents but I can't find them
I'm the only student who doesn't have any companion
in the marching of the students who got honors,
All people are staring at me, I heard someone says
"kawawa naman sya, wala ung parents nya" but I
ignored what people are saying.

At the middle of the program, I saw my aunt.
My Mother sent my aunt to have someone to hang my
medal on my neck.
After hanging my medal on my neck, she went home.
She left me all alone.

From that time on, I don't want to expect anything
from my parents.
Everytime they are arguing,
My Father always tells me that I am not his daughter
and he is not my father.
It always flashes back on my mind, suddenly, my tears
are falling without being noticed.

You can see me laughing or smiling
but behind that happy face is a thousand tears hiding.
I don't want to let others see those tears, so
I just keep it.
I want to focus on my studies but no one inspires me.

Sometimes, I asked God, why have you forsaken me?
no one loves me,

But I realized and I always think that

"Is lying all right?" I onc posed this question in a quiz after discussing my report in the story of a Hungarian who lied about the situation of his wife in order for his children not to be hurt by the truth that their mother had passed away. Surprisingly, only 10 percent answered "no" and the rest said, "it depends", "maybe", or "yes", and then gave the reason behind it.

Sometimes we are caught in a tight spot and forced to b dishonest a little, We give half-truths in some circumstances in order to cover something up. All the while we thought we committed a slight mistake and there's no equivalence to other types defect. In our minds, we reason out, it is forgivable.

Lying might be in a form of hyperboles and litotes where we tend to
exaggerate the story in order to get the approval of people or minimize the situation to make the dreaded action less conspicuous. Such stories that put the villain in a total devilish look and make our own character, the meek and the good one, the person who is unjustly threatened. Anyway no person would make his/her own character from his/her own mouth an awful one.

In a situation where we take the credit o something, we did not do any effort to it. Is it still being dishonest? I explicitly say yes. We are aware of it and the person who gave the credit doesn't know, so, who's accountable?

Whatever the reason may be, lying is still lying. It is repeatedly declared in the Bible that lying is evil. Lying is not all right. There is no such thing as little lie or white lie. Maybe we just believed into that idea so that our conscience won't bother us. Did it bother? Should we continue that practice? Where does our future lie? Maybe something is not right. Why not just plainly say what is true. It's not hard to b utterly honest. It's the easy way out rather than threading lies after lies. Though telling the truth hurts, at least we have done something right.

Everybody sees me as a happy and carefree girl. My friends describe me as someone who knows how to handle every problem easily. They see me as someone who's so optimistic.

Every time I look at my own reflection in the mirror, I always paint a coat of another me. Paint a mask of another person that everyone will like     . But is this the real me? I don't know if I am confused. I guess not. Deep in the eyes of the happy girl they see are suppressed emotions, emotions so long hidden and seemingly unnoticeable. Behind the image of the happy girl is a sad, lonely, broken-hearted soul. I think no one ever saw that. No one noticed the heart of the girl broken, kept together by thick coats of paint. No one ever saw the vulnerable soul the girl had. No one ever saw the fragile spirit being hidden in colorful shades of paint.and cheerful looking mask. Everything is a fraud! I am a fraud! I guess that's the real me! I wear different masks, painted with different colors so that everybody will like me, but my life s hell, full of pretensions, pretensions that slowly kill me, pretensions that slowly break me down. I am not what you see I am. I am full of fallacies. I fool all of you! Behind this jolly-faced person is someone who, when unmasked, is like a rag torn into pieces. I am dull-colored girl coated with thick colorful paints.

Am I real? I don't know. I am confused. Maybe all I need is a person who truly understands, someone who will love me for who I am. Please help me remove this irritating coats of paint. Please help me remove this heavy mask I am wearing. Help me see the real me. Please!
